Phwaaar! Great flavour combinations. You’ve got the sweetness of the tomatoes, then an explosion of fragrant basil, finishing with the floral kiss of honey. Yes, MASTERCHEF!! has returned to our screens.
Actually this is a delicious and unusual dish. If you can only summon the enthusiasm to cook one thing this year, make sure it is this soup.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Skill level: easy
Serves: 2 mains, 4 starter
Ingredients
- ripe tomatoes – cut into chunks – 1 kg
- 1 red onion – sliced
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 bouquet garni
- 1 big sprig of basil
- honey – 2 tbsp
- olive oil
Heat some olive oil in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan and gently cook the onion for 2 minutes until softened.
Add the garlic and cook for a further minute.
Add the rest of the ingredients, bring to the boil, cover and gently simmer for 30 minutes.
Liquidise with a hand blender and season to taste.
Add a good slug of olive oil and serve with a sprinkling of chives.
Verdict: The best (tomato) soup you will ever taste. This is good… but is a soup good enough to win MasterChef?
Drink: A beer or two from Berlin.
Entertainment: ‘MasterChef’ – what else. Gregg seems to have some badly concealed scabs on his top lip.
